We Cross to Eleuthera

I just realized that it has been a log time since I updated the ships log and a lot has happened.
My sister Milbrey visited us for a week starting 2/4. She flew into Marsh Harbor and we spent the week in that area. We visited Green Turtle Cay to the west and went as far east as Sandy Cay. Although we had several days of rain and another several with brisk winds that prevented snorkeling, we did get a lot done and hade a good time. She lives up the Hudson River on Copake Falls and left very cold weather to be here so it is all relative! Photos will be on the site as soon as I get to a place where I have high-speed access.
After provisioning in Marsh Harbor we moved south to near Little Harbor on the 12th and staged for the crossing to Eleuthera. Not being superstitious, we made the crossing on Friday the 13th! We crossed with three other sailboats and two trawlers in light southerly winds and calm seas and dropped the hook in the Royal Island harbor by 5 pm.
Yesterday, we moved to Spanish Wells and went ashore to explore the town. It is a working commercial fishing village with a lot of farming of citrus fruits and bananas. There are also a large variety of flowers in the yards.
We have made friends with a new group of cruisers which is always fun. One of them is a work aboard repair guy and he helped correct the problem I’ve had for the last 10 months with my new alternator and battery charging. The fix was simple once the problem was identified. The new alternator can put out a lot more power than the wire from the alternator to the battery could handle so he installed a bigger wire and the problem was solved. The batteries now charge quickly and fully!
Our basic plan (there is not plan) is to work our way down the west side of Eleuthera and then decide if we are going to visit Cat Island or cross to the Exumas. We’d like to see Cat, revisit Conception Island, maybe go to San Salvador (where Columbus’ supposedly landed to discover the New World) and then cross to Georgetown in the Exumas. We can fly from G town to Nassau to connect with our flight to Newark on March 8th. On returning to G town, we would then work our way up the Exumas for the return to the US. But like I said, there is no plan ….
